{} Social Solutions has partnered with the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies (UMSNHS) to address health issues that disproportionately affect Hispanics. With grant writing assistance from Social Solutions, the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies has received a $7 million, five year grant from the National Institutes of Health to support the creation of a National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities - University of Miami Center of Excellence for Hispanic Health Disparities Research (El Centro). El Centro will promote research to develop culturally-tailored interventions focused on health conditions that disproportionately affect Hispanics, including substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, family and intimate partner violence, and co-occurring mental health conditions. In addition to promoting research conducted by senior investigators, El Centro will promote the work of young scientists in an effort to mentor the next generation of health disparities researchers. Social Solutions has also partnered with UMSNHS on Project SEPA (Salud/Health, Educacion/Education, Prevencion/Prevention, Autocuidado/Self-care) for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The goal of this project is to enhance the capacity of HIV prevention organizations to implement and sustain the effective HIV interventions in an effort to decrease the number of Latinas at risk for acquiring or transmitting HIV infection in southern Florida. Established in 1948 as South Florida’s first collegiate nursing program, the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami has a distinguished tradition of preparing nurses to provide compassionate, quality care to local, national and international communities. The School of Nursing and Health Studies has set the standard for quality nursing and health studies in South Florida for more than 50 years. It is a national leader in the area of cultural competency, which recognizes an individual’s unique health beliefs and practices.
